turkey on thanksgiving

Turkey on Thanksgiving
Many of us wonder why is turkey serve on thanksgiving? many believe it was what pilgrims ate others believe what they want to believe. I believe you can eat whatever your want on thanksgiving.
I read on a website called thelaboroflove.com that Queen Elizabeth was at a fall harvest and decide to older a baked goose (turkey) because at this time it was the most desirable dish. After this happened many others started hearing about turkey. After the ''word'' went around queen Elizabeth was so satisfied she order another turkey many other people started following her steps in England they believed turkey was the dish everyone needed on their table on thanksgiving eve.
I come from Dominican Republic. In my country we don't celebrate thanksgiving we have what its called ''noche buena'' which consist of having a potatoes salad with ''pernil'' pork , rice and the desert a flan. To us Noche buena will never be the same without those items, the same happens in USA thanksgiving cannot be thanksgiving without the turkey. But my point its we cannot believe what others are usually saying the history behind the turkey on thanksgiving its unknown because it will always be your opinion or whatever u believe you know.
In conclusion having turkey on thanksgiving might of came from Queen Elizabeth idea or the pilgrims seating down to have it as dinner on thanksgiving but to me i believe you can have whatever you want to eat on a day such as or any other '' important'' day. Turkey symbolizes happiness to others as pernil symbolizes noche buena to us Dominicans , i believe as long as you spending time with your family that's what matters.

  1. I agree, Noche buena would not be the same without those plates of food :) I like the last part where it's not really what you eat that matters but what brings your family together :)

  2. Had no idea it all started with Queen Elizabeth. Who knew!

I agree with the fact that one can eat whatever they want on Thanksgiving, many families don't always follow the traditional "Thanksgiving", and many people add different dishes. My own mother often makes LASAGNA on that day! =)

It's cool that your family, and Dominicans have a special holiday like that. Nothing goes in my parent's native country of Ecuador from what I recall that goes on at the same time of Thanksgiving from what I've been told.

  3. I like how you used your culture's holiday and it showed me that thanksgiving is not the only holiday which people get together and eat. I agree on what you said in your conclusion about eating whatever you want on any important day. Thanksgiving is not about the turkey, its about who you spend it with.

  4. Fiolina!

Interesting, very interesting. Lots of great ideas - it seems likeyou have the raw material to write several different papers! This is a good thing in one way, but can make this feel less connected than the ideal.

A few notes to think about: A goose is a different animal from a turkey (at that time they only had turkey in North America, not England) - The idea of the article you read is that the pilgrims, inspired by the queen's love of goose and looking for a substitute for goose in the US, used the turkey instead. (The source you used was not the most thorough, so its easy to see how you got the wrong idea from it)

Also, staying on one point (one holiday and one food - either American thanksgiving or Noche Buena) would help you keep this essay together.

You definately piqued everyone's interest in all these ideas!
